In Florida, licensed acupuncturists are required to renew their licenses biennially, with the current renewal cycle ending on February 28, 2025. As part of the renewal process, practitioners must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) within each two-year period. These CE hours are designed to ensure that acupuncturists maintain and enhance their professional knowledge and skills.
Continuing Education Requirements:
Total Hours: 30 CE hours every two years.
General Hours: 21 hours in general acupuncture-related subjects.
Biomedical Sciences: 5 hours focusing on biomedical sciences to integrate Western medical knowledge with acupuncture practice.
Laws and Rules: 2 hours covering Florida laws and rules related to the practice of acupuncture.
Medical Errors: 2 hours dedicated to the prevention of medical errors.
For first-time license renewals, practitioners are required to complete:
HIV/AIDS Education: 3 hours focusing on HIV/AIDS.
Medical Errors: 2 hours on the prevention of medical errors.
These initial renewal requirements replace the standard CE obligations for the first renewal cycle.
Human Trafficking Requirement:
As of January 1, 2021, all Florida-licensed acupuncturists were required to complete a one-time, 1-hour continuing education course on human trafficking. This course could be included in the general hours required and is not mandatory for subsequent renewals.
Florida utilizes the CE Broker system to track continuing education credits. Licensed acupuncturists must ensure that all completed CE courses are reported to CE Broker to facilitate a smooth license renewal process. Many approved CE providers automatically report course completions on behalf of practitioners.
Record-Keeping and Audits:
Practitioners are encouraged to retain certificates and documentation of completed CE courses for their records. While the CE Broker system maintains a record of reported courses, having personal copies ensures verification in case of discrepancies or audits.
